OpenAI DevDay 2026: Dots, Codex and new tools.

A concise look at Dots, GPT-6.1 Sol, Space, plugins and cloud tools, including the regional restrictions and the difference between launches and previews.

As of 29 September 2026. OpenAI presented new models, agents and tools at DevDay in San Francisco. Here is a quick summary, followed by the key details. Availability reflects launch conditions; some features are rolling out gradually.

The quick summary

  • Dots take on ongoing work. Personal Pro access excludes the EEA, Switzerland and the UK at launch.
  • GPT-6.1 Sol arrives in Work, Codex and the API. Ultrafast accelerates Astra; Pro 500 is the new tier for intensive use.
  • Space and Pages bring people and agents into shared documents. Codex Cloud, Code Review and Security Cloud expand development workflows.
  • Plugins, events and partner apps connect ChatGPT more closely to existing work.

Dots: availability depends on the plan

Dots are always-on agents powered by GPT-6 Astra. They have their own cloud computer and can keep working towards goals using connected apps. Access to your own computer is optional and starts turned off.

The official eligibility rules distinguish between plans:

  • Pro: gradual rollout in supported markets, excluding the European Economic Area (EEA), Switzerland and the UK. Personal Pro accounts across DACH are therefore excluded at launch.
  • Business Premium: rollout across all supported ChatGPT regions. The Pro restriction therefore does not amount to a blanket ban for companies in these countries.
  • Enterprise, including Edu and Healthcare: an admin-enabled beta, turned off by default.

The release notes require users to be 18 or older. Create a dot in the desktop app or a desktop browser, then use it in the mobile app when access reaches your account. Texting is a separate, limited beta for US Pro users. The linked launch materials do not give a date for European Pro access.

OpenAI also previewed specialist dots with their own identities and access for defined company responsibilities. These start as supported enterprise pilots; integration with Microsoft Agent 365 is in development. Announcement

Models, speed and cost

According to OpenAI, GPT-6.1 Sol improves coding, computer use and professional work over GPT-6 Sol. It launches in ChatGPT Work and Codex for Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu, and in the API as gpt-6.1-sol. It is not initially available in ordinary Chat mode. OpenAI’s performance claims come from its own evaluations.

Standard API prices, for prompts with up to 272,000 input tokens, are $2 for input, $0.10 for cache reads, $2.50 for cache writes and $10 for output, per million tokens. Other processing tiers and longer prompts have separate prices.

Astra Ultrafast is a faster, more expensive API tier. It also comes to Work and Codex on Pro 500 and Enterprise; Sol Ultrafast is forthcoming. The API supports US data residency and global processing, without EU inference residency. This is a separate limitation from Dots eligibility.

Pro 500 costs $500 a month and includes Astra Ultrafast. Pro 200 is open to new subscriptions again with a lower usage allowance. Eligible existing subscribers keep their previous allowance until 29 October 2026. Buying credits on Pro 100 or Pro 200 does not unlock Ultrafast.

Development: cloud, reviews and custom agents

  • Codex Cloud: reusable project environments and a separate workspace per task; work can continue while your laptop is closed. Access covers eligible Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, Healthcare and Education accounts, subject to rollout and workspace settings.
  • Codex CLI: a refreshed interface, voice input and an /agents view. Code Review brings summaries, diffs and follow-up questions together; GitHub is generally available, GitLab is in preview.
  • Codex Security Cloud: repository scans, checks on new commits and proposed fixes for review. Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu get access including Daybreak Blue, subject to setup, permissions and billing.
  • Agents API with computer use: the new capability is operating a hosted browser. Your application handles website approvals and sign-in; the API itself was already in beta before DevDay.
  • Bedrock Managed Agents: OpenAI agents on AWS infrastructure, initially in limited preview.

The Decisions API lets Luna handle classification or routing using predefined answer choices; initially in limited preview. Private Intelligence combines Private Safety Processing for automated safety checks without human access to protected content with a Private Inference preview planned for the autumn. DevDay overview

Collaboration and integrations

Space and Pages bring files and collaboratively editable documents together for Pro, Business and Enterprise. Create and edit on desktop and web; mobile initially supports reading and sharing. Collaborative slides are planned for the coming weeks. Teams and Team Tasks add jointly maintained, scheduled or event-triggered work for Business and Enterprise.

@ChatGPT in Slack and Microsoft Teams brings work into team conversations. After admin setup, colleagues can participate without individual ChatGPT licenses. The Meetings plugin creates notes and action items in Space: a macOS beta for Pro and Business, with Enterprise initially limited to an alpha. Obtain participants’ consent first; audio is deleted once notes are ready.

Plugin extensions add sidebar apps, interactive panels and custom file viewers. Web support for Free and Go follows later. Plugin Creator, submission and discovery also receive improvements. MCP Events can trigger automations from app events; the integration follows a draft specification. Sites can host supported plugins in eligible Business, Enterprise, Healthcare and Edu workspaces, using each person’s own connections, and automate updates.

For Sites in Codex, the plan documentation lists another regional limit: currently unavailable in the EEA, Switzerland and the UK.

Shareable profiles showcase selected Sites; Enterprise support follows later. Sign in with ChatGPT adds account sign-in and optional Plus/Pro allowance sharing with participating tools such as Devin, Notion, Vercel and OpenClaw. You can set app limits; partner fees remain separate, and not every sign-in integration supports allowance sharing.

OpenAI Marketplace lets eligible enterprise customers apply part of existing contract commitments to approved partner software, with 32 initial partners. Announcement

What matters in practice

For Mainframe, the immediate value is in bounded work: reviewed code changes, maintained project documents and fewer manual handovers between apps. In DACH, the specific plan determines Dots eligibility first. Then the useful measures are appropriate permissions, traceable results and demonstrable value in the actual workflow. A focused pilot can establish those; a stage demonstration cannot.
